Agemark Senior Living
Welcoming Homes with Personalized Care
By Angella A. Arndt
Are you or a loved one considering a senior living community? Are you wondering where to begin? Between independent living, assisted living, and memory care communities, the choices can be overwhelming. You may want to consider a company that offers all three options, like Agemark Senior Living. Agemark is passionate about providing senior care in a loving, vibrant atmosphere.
Agemark Senior Living was founded in 1987 by Richard Westin and Jesse Pittore to create personalized senior living communities where everyone is treated like family. Their goal is to provide not just housing but real homes, where residents experience meaningful relationships, remain connected to the community, and continue to thrive. Agemark has 22 locations across the country, with several under construction. There are nine locations in Nebraska. The newest site, CountryHouse Residence, will open in Elkhorn this fall. CountryHouse Residence will be devoted to memory care.
Martin Hug, Chief Operating Officer, has been with the company for over 30 years. He’s been around senior living even longer. When he was a teen, he volunteered at the long-term care residence where his mother worked, playing his guitar for residents. He later graduated from Dana College with a degree in long-term care administration. Martin believes an important part of his role is delivering on the promises made to residents and families. “It’s letting people know that you can live with purpose, your voice will be heard, you can grow, and you can have fun,” he asserts. “At the end of the day, you matter. Our job is to deliver on those things every day.”
Agemark provides independent living, assisted living, and memory care communities in the Omaha area.
CountryHouse Residences for Memory Care specializes in serving individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other memory loss issues. Kensington-Evergreen Senior Living Communities offer assisted living services. The Meriwether is an “age-in-place” community that provides a combination of independent living, assisted living, and memory care. The age-in-place concept means that individuals who transition from independent living to assisted living can do so without relocating, which provides comfort and continuity.
Each Agemark community offers personalized, customized care to meet individual needs and desires. Ensuring meaningful experiences for every person is a core philosophy. “We focus on getting to know people on a personal level and working with their families,” Martin emphasizes. “We want to know what they wanted to accomplish before they came to us, and we help them achieve their goals. Whether it’s learning to play a musical instrument, taking a college course, going to an event, or volunteering, we strive to make it happen.”
Agemark offers LifeCycles, an exclusive wellness program. This multi-faceted program embodies spiritual, social, physical, and intellectual well-being to promote healthy aging. Spiritual wellness includes music classes, community service programs, and meditation. Social wellness is achieved through group outings, social activities, and celebrations. Physical wellness includes exercise, fresh air activities, and proper nutrition. Maintaining intellectual wellness includes activities such as educational opportunities, writing, discovery experiences, and attending community events. Each community has weekly themes and activities that are selected by both residents and staff. An essential aspect of the program is the belief that seniors should continue to be part of their local community.
Martin recommends asking several questions before choosing a community. What’s the community culture? What matters? What’s their focus? What’s the ratio of staff to residents? How long have they been in the senior living business? What services are offered? What transportation options are available, and what are the costs? How often and how much are rental increases? When taking a tour, the staff should ask questions to ascertain your needs, not just recite facility data. Martin acknowledges that no senior living community can be everything to everyone. “If we are not the right choice, we will let you know, and we will get you where you need to be.”
Martin believes that Agemark provides more than just a place to live, and he loves hearing positive feedback about their communities. “We receive lots of compliments from families about caring staff who treat loved ones like family, staff members who go above and beyond the call of duty, and satisfaction with our transportation services. If you’re looking for senior living that offers more than just a place to stay, we have a lot to offer. We believe in providing a home, a caring atmosphere, a place where the staff is always trying to raise the bar.”
“We’re here to create great experiences and great memories,” Martin concludes. “We always strive for excellence. No one will work harder to achieve the intangibles, and the beauty of it is that we get to get up the next day and make it happen again.”
