When we look good we feel good. In an effort to look our best, many of us get a little help from cosmetics, hair and body salons, and sometimes plastic surgery. For the latter, Plastic Surgery Associates (PSA) in Moline is ready to assist you. PSA is located at 515 Valley View Drive, Suite 201 in Moline.

Dr. Stephen Bayne, MD, PC, FACS, is a board certified plastic surgeon who joined PSA in 1997. He grew up in the area. After graduating from Rockridge High School, he attended Augustana College. His medical training took place at Rush Medical College in Chicago, followed by seven years of surgical training in Ohio. Five of those years were spent in general surgery, and two years were dedicated to plastic surgery. Dr. Bayne is licensed to perform plastic and reconstructive surgery in Illinois and Iowa.

PSA practices a broad spectrum of plastic surgery and carries medical-grade skin care products. Reconstructive or trauma surgery involves reconstruction after an accident or illness. Skin cancer is the most common cause of trauma treatment that Dr. Bayne sees. “An enormous amount of Midwesterners get skin cancer,” he says, “because we get periodic sun exposure. That is worse than controlled, generalized exposure.” Hand injuries from table saws and industrial accidents are common as well. Reconstructive surgery is the most rewarding part of Dr. Bayne’s job, he says. “Trying to make somebody relatively whole again so they can get back to work: that’s a pretty big deal.”

Plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons accounts for most of Dr. Bayne’s work. The most common procedure is breast augmentation, followed by face-lifts, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), liposuction, and tummy tucks. PSA also offers Botox and fillers, which are very popular, Dr. Bayne reports.

Like in the rest of the country, 90% of Dr. Bayne’s patients are women. Most cosmetic surgery takes place in PSA’s in-house certified surgery center. Dr. Bayne has privileges at five area hospitals as well. If a patient is ill or requires an overnight stay, the operation will likely take place at a hospital.

The PSA office has a typical reception desk with chairs lined up for waiting patients. The room is not typical, however. I found it to be attractive and elegant with dark wood, stylish lamps, and framed prints. A large number of brochures are available with information about surgical procedures, skin care, and related issues.

The staff includes Becky Duffield, secretary, Debbie Lindley, office manager, and Samantha Skinner, who assists in the office part-time and subcontracts part-time as an esthetician. In addition, PSA employs four nurses and a second part-time subcontract esthetician.

All procedures start with an office consultation. Dr. Bayne will discuss the options with you and go over the benefits and risks, as well as the limitations of plastic surgery. Many people have the misconception that the final result will be perfection, he says. “God didn’t make you perfect. I can’t make you perfect. ‘Perfect’ is not a word that should be used in plastic surgery.”

Managing the expectations of his patients is important to Dr. Bayne. Although his goal is to make every patient happy, he knows what he can achieve with plastic surgery and he wants patients to understand his limits as well. Occasionally, Dr. Bayne holds free seminars around the Quad Cities area to educate those who are interested in learning more about a particular topic.

The procedure that delivers the highest customer satisfaction rates is breast reduction, Dr. Bayne reports. Across the country and at PSA, 98% of patients say they would repeat the procedure. It can do much to relieve a woman’s pain and stress. The most challenging procedure is rhinoplasty. Dr. Bayne explains that there is only so much work that can be done on the delicate cartilage of the nose before it collapses completely. If you are considering rhinoplasty, Dr. Bayne will show you before and after pictures of former patients. He will also take pictures of you and use them to better illustrate what results you can expect.

If you are considering having plastic surgery, Dr. Bayne recommends that you start by exploring his Web site at www.psa-il.com. It has detailed information about many procedures, additional information about the office, and other resources. In your research, Dr. Bayne suggests that you look not only at good results, but at the times when things go wrong as well. This information will give you an idea of what questions to ask, as well as a better understanding of what is possible, he says.

It is also important to check with local and state medical boards. Find out if a doctor you are contemplating an appointment with is licensed, board certified, and if he/she has hospital privileges, Dr. Bayne suggests. Check to see if there are any complaints or lawsuits filed against him/her. If an office has its own surgical center, make sure it is certified. Patient safety is number one, Dr. Bayne emphasizes.

Keeping up with new technologies and developments is essential, he comments. Dr. Bayne travels around the world to attend conferences, learn about new procedures, and to talk to other plastic surgeons. He is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. According to PSA’s Web site, the ASPS has strict requirements for membership including more than six years of surgical training and experience, with at least three years specifically in plastic surgery. Membership gives Dr. Bayne the opportunity to visit other member surgeons to see new technology in action and to share expertise, he says.

Dr. Bayne cautions against new machines, creams, or procedures that promise great results. Half of these don’t work, he says. You know the saying: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

A good relationship with your doctor and the staff is essential. “From the time you call our office until the time you are finished, we want our clients to be happy with what they have come here for,” says Dr. Bayne. A pleasant office, a competent and friendly staff, and state-of-the-art equipment make this possible, he adds.

One satisfied customer says the following: “Dr. Bayne spent a lot of time talking with me and answering questions, making sure I was ready. He had come highly recommended, and the good things I’d heard about him were true. I am very confident in his precision and skill.” Plastic Surgery Associates can be reached at 309-764-4600.
