| Mark Neiswanger of Handy Mark thrives on tough projects his customers hire him and his crew to do. Their latest big job was a 2200- square-foot, three-level deck on a Capitol Beach property. Mark says, “The triple-level deck was a real challenge, but I enjoyed tackling it. It was fun.” Another difficult project Mark successfully tackled was a triple-car garage and breezeway addition in the Woods Park area of town. The owners of the home, Nick Partsch and his wife, Diane Rolfsmeyer, say, “We would highly recommend Handy Mark to anyone. He helped with the architecture and was the general contractor for the job. The work he couldn’t do he subcontracted out to very reputable people. The project stayed on time.” When they were first looking for a general contractor, it was important to Nick and Diane to feel comfortable that Mark could handle an older structure. He had to be thorough and be able to see and address potential problems. Mark fits the bill, they say. Nick comments, “Mark was very close to his estimate, and his prices were within reason.” Client Ann Wood is the owner of a newer, large Williamsburg area home, and Mark has worked on various projects for her over the past eight years. She says, “I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have Mark. He has an amazing company.” Ann had a mishap over the holidays coming down a staircase to take her dog outside. She tripped and went through the drywall. She called Mark, and he sent his employees over to fix it. She says, “They are timely and so neat and tidy that you don’t even know they are there. Drywall is dirty, but when they left there wasn’t a speck of dust on our Christmas decorations. I’m a huge fan! I cannot speak highly enough about Mark and his staff at Handy Mark. It is a great group of folks he has employed.” Mark and his crew, Zach, Mike, and Stewart, will tackle any project big or small anywhere in Lincoln and the surrounding area. They cover a lot of ground doing residential remodeling, handyman services, and retail services. Mark says, “We do a couple of decks a year; we replace windows and doors; and we do a lot of drywall and paint repair, including cracks in ceilings and walls.” Mark says the latter are Zach’s specialties. “The other two guys do carpentry work on trim, decks, and windows. They do quite a bit of bathroom remodels too.” Mark says he would expand and hire more people if he could find employees as good as who he has. He says he trusts all of his employees to do good-quality work the first time around. Not only that, but they are honest and trustworthy. Many of his customers are comfortable leaving his employees to work in and around their homes when they are not there. Mark shares, “People trust us with their keys.” Mark is now into home safety, specifically Strike Master II steel brackets. These go in door jams to prevent an intruder from kicking in the door. “I’ve put two of them on my house and I have done a couple others. I’m ready to install these for anyone who calls.” He adds, “Every year there are vandalisms and break-ins, and they seem to target side-door garage entries. I’m ready to go help homeowners prevent this from happening to them.” For the elderly and disabled, Handy Mark installs grab bars in showers and tubs and wheelchair ramps on porches. For the very young, Mark consults with families to childproof their homes. He says, “We’ll put cabinet door locks on all cabinetry as well as on all appliances. We’ll install safety gates and put rubber pads on the corners of all tables with sharp edges.” Mark and his crew will also do projects such as swing set assembly and fence installation. Handy Mark installs quality Pella brand windows and doors. Something new from Pella that Mark says has been popular is the triple-pane window. These are windows that have blinds placed between the glass. With the shades between the glass, there is no need for a window treatment. Also, since everything is between the glass, there are no cords hanging down for kids to play with. They are also dust-free. Pella is the only brand that offers this type of window, Mark says, and it exceeds the Energy Star rating for efficiency. Mark has this type of window in his own home, and he uses a cellular or honeycomb shade for the blind. I think the woodwork in Mark’s home is beautiful, and this type of window enhances its beauty. Pella has a great warranty if anything goes wrong, Mark points out. For custom design work, Mark prefers to show his clients pictures of past projects. A lot of the work he does starts from printouts that clients have as well. He doesn’t have a storefront. He can meet clients at a Pella store and use it as a resource. “I will show the client what is available, and then I can custom-design the project to satisfy their needs.” By working with Pella, Mark can also introduce his clients to the latest features available in construction such as the triple-pane window, he adds. A lot of the work Handy Mark does involves maintenance on new homes such as Ann Wood’s home. With the wear and tear typically involved with a home, homes usually need work done five years after they are built, Mark says. Ninety percent of Handy Mark’s clients are repeat customers and referrals. Mark also boasts that his crew can work outside in most weather conditions. By Valentine’s Day, the weather is decent with some 50- to 60-degree days. On extremely cold days, they stay busy working inside homes and businesses. For the business owner, Mark offers retail services. He serves many businesses doing retail and preventative maintenance services. This part of the Handy Mark business has grown to include malls in Grand Island, Kearney, Lincoln, Omaha, and into Iowa. Handy Mark also works regularly on maintaining Lincoln’s restaurants . The types of work done for these businesses includes replacing hardware, fixing broken ceilings and floor tiles, repairing leaky roofs, and replacing doors. Handy Mark can be reached at 402-540-6275.
