Spring
always reminds me of new things…whether it’s trying new things,
or making the everyday things we come into contact with seem like new,
or at least different. I think it’s human nature that we enjoy
and get excited about something that we’re not accustomed to. I
like to spice up my life by reinventing myself every now and then. This
time it’s my hair. But I think nearly every woman has had a bad
experience while trying something new with her hair. We all get comfortable
with our hairdressers and find it hard to go to a new one. Usually, we
find a new hairdresser by hearing about them from a friend, or from seeing
a haircut we like and going to the hairdresser who did the work. But
ultimately we feel as if we’re gambling with something that’s
very important to us—our hair! The best way to describe it is that
it’s a little scary!
When it comes to bad hair experiences, I can certainly relate! A couple
years ago, my hair was midway down my back. I took a chance and tried
a new hairdresser,
for an easy trim. I told her I was thinking about trying a shorter hairstyle
soon, and of course she asked, “What are you waiting for?” So I found
myself looking through the book of endless hairstyles. After finding a picture
of a style I liked we went with a slightly longer version of it. Well, you can
probably guess the result—I was horrified! The cut looked nothing
like the picture. After my appointment, when I got in the car and looked in the
rear view mirror, I couldn’t help get a tear or two in my eyes. After an
agonizing drive home, I went in the house and announced to my husband that I
looked like one of the Oompa-Loompas from the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory!” Of course, he vehemently disagreed, but there was no comforting
me at that point. However, time passed, the girls at the office reassured me
daily, and I finally got through that bad haircut experience. It took a while,
but in a month or so my hair was grown out to a comfortable length. What’s
that old saying, “Time heals all wounds?” Well, I guess it’s
true.
So the other day I decided it was time for a change. I’m very excited,
because I have since found a great new hairstylist. Her name is Dani, and she
listens very intently to what I’m looking for. But she didn’t hesitate
to tell me honestly what is right for my face and color. She did a new cut and
color for me to get ready for summer, and I couldn’t be happier with it.
Now it really feels like it’s time to bust out the new spring clothes and
shoes!
On a more serious note, many people who are going through treatment for cancer
have no choice when it comes to their hair. Some of the treatment causes hair
loss. But thankfully, I’ve noticed that when the hair grows back in after
the treatment is finished, most often the new hair is more attractive. I know
of a couple of ladies whose hair came back with more curl and body. And these
days, people waste no time showing their support for those who are going through
cancer treatment and losing their hair. One of our writers has a grandson named
Taylor who, along with most of his fellow 5th grade boys and their teacher, had
their heads shaved to raise money and awareness for cancer research. I think
that’s a great way to help others and try something new at the same time.
It’s also a great way to welcome spring!
