| Cosmetic Solutions Laser & Skin Care Center’s goal is to provide you with the very best science and professional skills in a friendly and comfortable atmosphere, says Dr. Johanna J. Abernathy, medical director of the Center. The Center, which is located at 855 A Avenue, N.E., is an entity of the OB GYN Associates, P.C. practice, which has set the standard for women’s health care in our community for decades, Dr. Abernathy adds. As I talked with Dr. Abernathy during our interview, her pride in the Center was apparent. A petite and attractive woman with a warm smile, Dr. Abernathy opened the Center in March 2006. “Laser is a tool we have used in the medical industry for many years, so I became intrigued by the benefits of laser skin and hair removal treatments and the use of lasers for anti-aging of women and men,” she says. As a trained laser specialist, Dr. Abernathy says the idea of creating a place where clients could go for these procedures in our community was very exciting to her. The majority of the Center’s patients range from 30 to 60 years old, they also treat patients in their teens or younger with parent’s signed approval. Younger clients often visit for acne or hair removal. As they age, skin treatments for sun damage and restoration have been the most popular, Dr. Abernathy says. The Center is located in the same building as the OB GYN office. Dr. Abernathy and her professionally licensed and experienced staff provide a tranquil, spa-like atmosphere for their clients, in my opinion. As the menu of products and services describes, the Center offers a wide array of solutions for clients to choose from. The list begins with acne treatments, extending through Vibraderm, IPL, and Laser Genesis. There is also laser hair reduction; vein therapy for the face and body; anti-aging Cutera Titan treatments; injectables; and chemical peels. Also available are aesthetic facials with eight options to choose from, along with professional skin products by Obagi and SkinMedica, in addition to Jane Iredale Mineral makeup. Dr. Abernathy explains that many clients choose services based on the time of year. For example, in January and February leg vein and hair removal services are the most popular when there is no sun exposure. That way they can see the utmost results in time for spring and summer. In March and April, clients might choose treatments for rosacea and facial veins, and they may get started on professional skin products to improve their facial skin health. In May and June, many seek Botox or other fillers to reduce wrinkles and look their best for special occasions such as weddings, graduations, and family or class reunions. Acne control and other acne products are also popular during May and June, Dr. Abernathy says, and the staff at the Center will often work with the client and her dermatologist to obtain optimum results. World Site Day will be observed on May 14, 2010, which is when a large percentage of Botox sales are donated to Africa to help with vision treatments. Laser Genesis works to safely reduce large pores and fine lines, improve uneven skin texture, diffuse redness and scars, and soften skin. This treatment also stimulates and increases the production of collagen and elastin fiber within the skin. Both treatments require little to no downtime for patients, Dr. Abernathy reports. The remainder of the year is typically focused on the use of professional products such as the aforementioned lines to proactively provide skin with the basis for optimum skin health. “All treatments and products are available throughout the year, and now is always the best time to begin to replenish and care for your skin and to provide long-term health and anti-aging benefits,” Dr. Abernathy points out. “I feel we are providing a wonderful service for our clients through Cosmetic Solutions. Licensed Medical Estheticians Haley Peterson and Sara Powell, along with Receptionist Carla Labus and Staff Coordinator Stephanie Baumann, complete the team at the Center. Terrie says her staff stays up-to-date on new advances through ongoing trainings and webinars given by various doctors using the equipment and products available in the Center.
